Recommened Book - Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Ready Player One Review

Now lately I've been reading a lot of books that have been made into movies. As you can tell from the title Ready Player One is one of them. I was very hesitant to give this book a chance given I enjoyed the movie for it's CG quality and effects. But in the back of my mind the movie always felt more of a demo reel showing off cool CG and effects and not so much a story. But I ended up picking up this book anyway and giving it a chance, plus it was only like a quarter at the thrift store. I will say this, I was really impressed with how good this book is! In fact I rate this book in my top 10 favorite books now.

Book Summary

The book takes place in 2045 following a kid named Wade Watts. If you know nothing about the movie or the book, it's about a virtual reality that people can log in and become an avatar in a place called the OASIS. The creator of the OASIS ended up creating a type of virtual treasure hunt giving the opportunity for the users to claim the reward he has placed before them. The cover of the book gives a glimpse of how the future looks. It's a really dark and grungy world with a virtual reality to escape away from it all. As we follow Wade on this journey in the book you will get a better understanding of how the world is in Ready Player One.

The Movie Is Nothing Like The Book

What made this book enjoyable was the fact it was nothing like the movie, and the story was really good! The only real similarities are yes they had a VR world and yes the characters had the same names, but that is about it. This book clicked with me in so many ways, I'm not sure to call this spoilers but the characters are described way differently than how the movie made them. And a lot of the roles are screwed up if you watch the movie. In fact some characters are almost forced in the movie that had no real big importance in the book. The book had chunks of content taken out I felt after reading the book. Almost as if Hollywood just wanted to go for the 'Wow' factor. And I really don't blame them in the end for going the way they did. The movie was fun to watch, don't get me wrong, but still lacked a solid story. For those who love to read I feel you will get so much more out of the book in the end.

So if you come across this book I recommend adding it to your library. You might find that it could also become one of your favorite books too.
